First Grade

Ms. S. Thomson

Dear Incoming 1st Grade Student,

Congratulations on becoming a first grader!  I am so excited to have you in my class. I have a lot of fun activities planned.  First grade is great and a little bit different than kindergarten.  You are getting older, and can handle more responsibility.  Here are some of the things you will now be able to do:

Organize your school materials in your desk
Manage your time with homework and class work
Take an active role in the classroom (participate in lessons, classroom jobs, etc.)

There are many ways you can be successful in first grade.  I am here to help you.  We will work together and create a positive and happy classroom.  Over the summer it will help if you review your numbers, start getting ready for addition and subtractions, and read as much as possible! Please go to the Library and check out books. You should be reading every day! Below are the required summer reading books.

  • Blackout
  • Dogs
  • I Spy Fly Guy
  • One World, One Day
  • Starfish

In addition, please choose from one of the following projects below.

Use a shoebox to make a diorama about the topic of one of your favorite books above.

Make a vocabulary booklet however you like, using special vocabulary words in a book of your choosing, from the list above. You will find and write vocabulary words. Write the word and draw a picture of the word.

Make a small poster about the facts you learned in one of your favorite books above.

Please bring your project on the first day of school.  Have a wonderful and safe summer!  See you in August!
